As part of the toxics reduction strategy, the Government of Ontario is helping regulated facilities use fewer toxic substances and move to safer alternatives with the Toxics Reduction Act.
While preparing toxic substance reduction plans is mandatory, implementing the plans is voluntary. The plans can also help businesses identify operational efficiencies, costs savings and other opportunities to improve their competitive advantage in markets that are moving increasingly towards a greener economy.
In recognition that the Toxics Reduction Plans were given a one year extension and are not needed until 31 December 2012, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) will not be enforcing the requirement to compare the 2010 and 2011 data in the 2012 Annual Report for those facilities that were required to submit their second annual report by 29 Jun 2012.Additionally, on 1 May 2012, the MoE began training for licensed Toxic Substance Reduction Planners. For more information about pre-requisites, online and in-class training and exams, please visit www.ontario.ca/toxicsreduction.
Be prepared to meet these challenges by attending the 6th Annual Overview of Environmental Legislation session 19 September 2012.
