Did you Know? The 2012 Ontario Budget could impact your Environmental Programs

The 2012 Ontario Budget could impact your Environmental Programs.

  • Fees for contaminated sites, water taking, ECAs and hazardous waste will increase by approximately $10 million(M).
  • Greater emphasis to be placed on ‘Prevention’ and the ‘Polluter-Pay’ principle (e.g. contaminated sites)
  • ‘User-Pay’ model for ‘Water-Taking’ charges will pass some of the costs onto commercial and industrial water users, an incentive for organisations to better conserve water and ensure more efficient and sustainable processes – $3.5M is estimated in 2013 and $6M going forward
  • To move towards full-cost recovery, the government will revise the fee structure for ECAs and EASR by $3.8M in 2013 and going forward.
  • Raising Hazardous Waste tonnage fees, to be borne by the larger generators, will provide greater incentives to reduce or recycle waste. Paper manifest fees will be increased, which will help encourage greater use of the lower-cost electronic manifesting system – to generate $2.4M in 2014 and going forward.
